Scene Analysis

Aesthetic

The scene takes place in a mental institution. The row of cells Hannibal is in is underground as he is a very dangerous person. The row of cells is made out of brick, giving a very underground dungeon look, whereas, in hospitals and even some prisons the walls are painted, this cell row just has plain brick.  As far as colours are concerned there aren't any. The scene is not a colourful one at all, however, this was by design, the walls, hallway and cells are meant to look dreary and dull as that's what the inmates deserve, they've committed crimes and this is their punishment.

Space and Composition

Clarice is centre-right in this shot, the dull background is clearly in view and so is Hannibal, just out of focus. There is a lot of over the shoulder shots in this scene as the two characters are playing mind games with another.

Later in the scene Clarice shows Hannibal her credentials and the two get closer to the glass, the shot on screen go from over the should to close ups of the characters faces whilst they talk . This makes the scene feel a lot more personal and intense.

Acting

in the beginning Hannibal is waiting for Clarice in a very creepy manner, just standing in the middle of the cell. Clarice is clearly worried about getting hurt by the other inmates and shows her emotions. When she meets Hannibal, she attempts to use her FBI training to get Hannibal on her side and get through to him, however Hannibal quickly takes charge of the conversation. Anthony Hopkins does a very good job at being creepy without making the audience disgusted by him, he's a cannibal that openly admits to eating people yet he doesn't come across as a bad person, he's well spoken and mannered and really challenges what the audience perceives as a bad person.

Narrative

ACT 1: Introduction of characters (Hannibal and Clarice along with other inmates)

ACT 2: Conflict between characters in conversation. Almost like a tennis match is going one between the two.

ACT 3: Conflict resolved when Hannibal gives Clarice a clue on where to look to find Buffalo Bill.

Editing

The opening part of the scene when Hannibal and Clarice are first talking is full of very quick cuts, back and forth between the faces of both characters. This makes the audience see the reaction and emotion of the characters. Once Clarice shows her credentials to Hannibal she sits down on a chair and continues to question Hannibal but Hannibal remains standing, this is a little nod to who's in charge of the conversation, Hannibal stands over Clarice and Clarice is intimidated by Hannibal and just sits in her chair.

Sound

One of the things that make this scene so good is the lack of music. At the beginning, the score comes in as Clarice is walking past the other inmates, as she comes to Hannibal's cell the score drops a couple of octaves to this very low and almost evil sound and then slowly fades away. As the conversation continues the score creeps back in when the tension starts to rise. Clarice hands Hannibal a survey and Hannibal is insulted by her doing so and starts to verbally attack her, the way she looks, what she's wearing and her accent. The music adds tension to the scene very quickly, before the music comes in the characters were having a normal calm conversation, however that turns sour when Clarice asks Hannibal to do the survey. The music comes back in when the scene is about to end to add a sense of urgency to the scene.

Technical aspects

For the camera movement with the introduction to the various cellmates, the camera was handheld to make it seem like a first person perspective of what Clarice is seeing. With regards to the lights

Representation

Hannibal is not the typical serial killer, he's oddly likeable. His politeness and demur really make the audience grow to like him even though he is a crazy killer. His charm really makes the film more engaging as we know that we shouldn't really like him but the audience does. Also, Agent Clarice is a woman which is the subplot of the film, at the beginning she is shown to be the only person in the squad that's a woman.

Scene Analysis 2

Aesthetic

In Into the Spider-Verse, there is a hybrid aesthetic. Its a way of presenting a story that has barely been done before. The style is taken from the way the spiderman is presented in the comics. In fact, throughout the film, there are several, different moments that are purposely made to look like a comic panel.  In this scene, we can see miles walking through New York to his uncle Aarons apartment. The creators of this film have made New York a very colourful city. All the colours work really well together. One of the main colours seen in the scene is Purple. This is because the prowler's costume is purple so its almost hinting at us what's coming up, a very nice detail.

Space and Composition

Acting

This is an animated film so ill be going off the voice acting and facial expressions. The voice actors do a really good job of making the characters seem like real people. The voice actor for Miles does a good job at being an upset teenager. Also, the voice actor for Miles dad does a really good job at being upset. My favourite bit of animation is when Miles finds out his uncle is the prowler, even though Miles has his mask on you can really see the shock in his face, this accompanied with Miles's heavy breathing and the amazing soundtrack make the scene come to life.

Narrative

Act 1: Miles Walking through New York upset and seeks refuge with his Uncle Aaron so he walks to his Apartment.

Act 2: The prowler breaks into the apartment, later revealed to be Uncle Aaron.

Act 3: The Prowler chases miles through the city, Miles gets away.

Editing

The opening of this scene has some match cuts. which is an excellent way to show his journey through the city. Its a creative and quick way to show a passage of time. Another editing technique that is shown in this scene and throughout the film. The background of some scenes are blurred. This is a technique that the animators edited into the film to make it look more like a comic book. Also throughout there are several shots that are specifically made to look like comic book panels.

Sound

Sound in this scene is a key feature as it is used to convey the emotions of Miles in this scene. This twist has a massive impact on both Miles and the story. The music used in this scene is definitely my favourite music in the film. The sense of impending doom you get with the prowlers theme slowly creeping in. The subtly really makes it work so well like the joker's theme in the dark knight rises it really creeps up on you.

Technical aspects

Representation

The main character of this film is Miles Morales and he's black. He also has black parents. This is a first as its the first time we've had a black spiderman. I feel like now more than ever there is more representation of Black people in films with films like Moonlight winning best picture at the Oscars and Spiderman into the Spiderverse is another part of the representation happening in HollyWood.

Analyising a scene by its sound

Dialogue (ADR)

All the dialogue in this scene would be onset. Batman's voice sounds like its been changed however the actor changed his voice onset for the role so there wasn't any ADR in use.

Ambience

There isn't any ambience in the scene with the Joker, which I think adds a lot to the scene. The uncomfortable silence in the room as Joker walks around scaring everyone asking people where Harvey dent is made for a really intense scene.

Sound FX (SFX/FOLEY)

For sound effects, there would be a couple of them. At the beginning of a scene there is a car blowing up so there would be an explosion sound effect. Also, the scene where Bruce beats the guy with a shotgun there was impact sound effects as he didn't actually hit the guy. Also, the scene where batman fights the goons there is sound effects for the punches and for when the Knife comes out of the joker's foot. Also the window braking and the women sliding down the glass and when Batman and the lady land on the car

Diagetic and Non- Diagetic

When the Joker enters the party the music goes silent and all you can hear is the joker talking and the various different things he picks up and touches, wine glasses and food. Also, you can hear his thugs hitting people at times.

Score/Soundtrack/Music

The one note dragged across a violin string as well really makes you uneasy, like nails down a chalkboard. This piece of music is called "Joker's theme" and is played whenever he's on-screen, adding to his character and keeps coming back when he is on screen. In this scene Jokers theme gets played almost to the point where it sounds like an alarm, it just keeps getting pitched up and up

Alterations in post

I thought that there would changes in post during this scene as the henchmen have masks on and Batman has a deeper, different voice to bruce wayne. However after some reaserch i found out that Christopher Nolan relied on onset, diagetic voices.

There is Foley used for when Bruce beats the henchmen with his own gun and there is also a bit of reverb when he enters his safe room, as the room hes in has very high ceilings.

Scene Sound Analysis

Dialogue (ADR)

All dialogue for this scene would've been on set. There aren't any points where ADR would've been used. Something interesting with the dialogue in this scene is that the two actors speak to each other in Italian, this is more realistic as if two Italians met up they would speak in Italian and not English.

Ambiance

There is any ambient noise in the scene which adds to the tension. You can only hear the voices of Sollozzo, Micheal and McCluskey, Later when Micheal goes to the toilet you can hear the water flowing through the pipes which ads to the scene as toilets arent always silent.

Sound (FX/FOLEY)

The most important sound in this scene is the sound of the train going past the restaurant. In this scene Micheal is going to kill Sollozzo and McClusky, however he hasn't killed anyone before so hes a little hesitant. The train noise is like a metaphor for his brain and whats going on in there. When hes talking to them hes calm, when he gets the gun he starts to freak out a bit and the train comes to a screeching holt and  then when he decides hes going to shoot them the train stops again, after they die the scene goes quiet and you cant here the train anymore.

Diagetic and Non- Diagetic

The train is a non diagetic  sound. Also in the scene you can hear plates and glasses clinking. Also in the toilets you can here the water running through the pipes.
